# Modules

> How Zeno is organized as an ERP-style workspace: a shared workspace, optional operational modules, and Books always running underneath.

Zeno is organized like an ERP workspace, not a set of disconnected apps. Your team picks the operational modules it needs, but every organization gets the same shared workspace and the same Books underneath everything.

## How to think about the product

There are three layers:

1. **Shared workspace** — Contacts, Document Center, and Emails are always on. **Tasks**, **Inbox**, and **Chat** can be turned off per organization. These cut across every module.
2. **Operational modules** — Rental, Development, Contractor, Practice, Glass, Expenses, Budgeting, Campaigns. Each one can be turned on or off per organization.
3. **Books** — always on. Every financial action from every module posts here. [Reports](https://zenorent.com/docs/reports.md) reads from it.

If you're new to the app, identify which operational module owns your day-to-day work. Then use the shared tools around it. Books runs in the background as you go.

## Operational modules

These can be enabled or disabled per organization in [Admin](https://zenorent.com/docs/admin.md).

| Module | Best for | Start here |
| - | - | - |
| **Rental** | Property managers tracking properties, tenants, leases, rent invoices, and tenant payments | [Rental](https://zenorent.com/docs/rental.md) |
| **Development** | Teams selling units and tracking project-level vendor costs | [Development](https://zenorent.com/docs/development.md) |
| **Contractor** | Customer jobs, estimates, invoices, vendor bills, and subcontractor compliance | [Contractor](https://zenorent.com/docs/contractor.md) |
| **Practice** | Recurring accounting or tax service work delivered by period | [Practice](https://zenorent.com/docs/practice.md) |
| **Glass** | Auto-glass operations: dispatch, jobs, technicians, insurance, customers, and AR | [Glass](https://zenorent.com/docs/glass.md) |
| **Expenses** | Adds receipt capture, card activity, and expense reporting on top of regular bank feeds | [Expenses](https://zenorent.com/docs/expenses.md) |
| **Budgeting** | Forecasting, a rolling cash-flow projection, and debt payoff against the live ledger | [Budgeting](https://zenorent.com/docs/budgeting.md) |
| **Campaigns** | Email newsletters written with your AI: audiences, signup forms, approved sends, and reports | [Campaigns](https://zenorent.com/docs/campaigns.md) |

## Books — always on

[Books](https://zenorent.com/docs/books.md) is the accounting backbone. Every organization has it, and you can't turn it off. Posted invoices, bills, and payments from every operational module land in Books, and [Reports](https://zenorent.com/docs/reports.md) reads from it.

You don't need to work directly in Books to use the app — it runs in the background as you work in the operational modules.

## Shared workspace

Surfaces that work across every module. Contacts, Document Center, and Emails are always on. **Tasks**, **Inbox**, and **Chat** are also organization-wide but can be turned off in [Admin](https://zenorent.com/docs/admin.md) if your team doesn't use them.

* **[Inbox](https://zenorent.com/docs/workflow/inbox.md)** — intake for checks, leases, bills, receipts, contracts, and other documents.
* **[Contacts](https://zenorent.com/docs/workflow/contacts.md)** — shared directory of tenants, buyers, customers, vendors, and other people.
* **[Document Center](https://zenorent.com/docs/workflow/document-center.md)** — filed documents across the entire organization.
* **[Tasks](https://zenorent.com/docs/tasks.md)** — assign, follow up, and track work.
* **[Chat](https://zenorent.com/docs/workflow/chat.md)** and **[Emails](https://zenorent.com/docs/workflow/emails.md)** — communication tied to the work.
